Mesothelioma (asbestos cancer)Mesothelioma is one of the cancer varieties. In this disease malignant cells are found in the mesothelium - membrane covering and protecting internal organs of human body. This thin membrane consists of two layers and produces a fluid, lubricating internal moving organs. such as lugs and heart and giving them easily glide against adjacent organs. When mesothelium cells become anomalous and start to divide without control, they can intrude into nearby tissues and damage them. In most cases mesothelioma cancer begins in the pleura but it may also occur in the heart, the pericardium, the peritoneum or tunica vaginalis. |
It is generally considered that the main reason of mesothelioma cancer is exposure to asbestos. But there is another point of view. Russian representatives diclared that there is no evident correletion between asbestos exposure and mesothelioma. |
The correlation between lung cancer and exposure to asbestos was first reported in 1925 and many medical researches carried out during the next 60 years confirmed this correlation. As a result in 1999 Euro Commission adopted Directive 1999/77/ЕС prohibiting the new applications of chrysotile asbestos on their territories. At the same time anti- asbestos campaign was started in many countries.
All sound logical, but there is the reverse of the medal. Russia, the world's leading producer of asbestos, has direct opposite opinion on asbestos danger. "It's just a PR campaign when they say that asbestos can kill," said V.Ivanov, president of the Russian Asbestos Association.
Y.Kovalevsky, the member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, said: "For the general population, there aren't significant risks... I haven't seen a single scientific study that shows the need for a asbestos forbidding."
It is evident that the problem of mesothelioma cancer has not only medical but also business aspects. Asbestos industry is huge business.
