What is this site about

During the first half of the 1900s, growing evidence demonstrated that asbestos is a health hazard causing scarring of the lungs.
The connection between asbestos exposure and lung cancer was noted as early as 1925, and confirmed by many epidemiologic studies of asbestos-exposed workers over the next 70 years. All four main types of commercially used asbestos, chrysotile, amosite, anthophyllite, and mixtures containing crocidolite, are associated with an increased risk of lung cancer.
In 1999 Euro Commission adopted Directive 1999/77/ЕС forbiding the introduction of new applications for chrysotile asbestos on their territories.

From other side, Russia, the world's leading producer of asbestos, has direct opposite opinion on asbestos danger. "It's just a PR campaign when they say that asbestos can kill," said Viktor Ivanov, head of the Russian Chrysotile Association, an industry group based in the Russian town of Asbestos in the Ural mountains region.
Yevgeny Kovalevsky of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, said: "For the general population, there aren't significant risks... I haven't seen a single scientific study that shows the need for a asbestos ban."

Meanwhile, international public health experts at the first World Social Security Forum in Moskow urged a global ban of asbestos, saying that up to 100,000 people die every year of asbestos-related diseases.
